01 / The northern walk

Volosko to Opatija. From fishing harbour to Riviera.

Begin with fishing boats and finish among grand hotel terraces. This northern chapter brings two different sides of the Riviera into a single, unhurried morning.

Your walk at a glance

Start
Volosko harbour
Finish
Slatina, Opatija
Suggested time
1½–2½ h

Times are editorial suggestions for a relaxed visit, not measured walking times. The tourism board describes the full promenade as about 10 km; your distance depends on entry points and detours. Access from streets can involve steps. Check a specific entrance locally if you need step-free access.1

Along the way

  1. Volosko harbour

Start at the harbour waterfront and join the coastal path towards Opatija. Explore the lanes first if you wish: they climb away from the sea, so keep the harbour as your meeting point.3

  2. The northern promenade

Stay with the marked seaside route towards central Opatija. Allow pauses at the small bays; street connections are useful exit points, but may include stairs.1

  3. Angiolina Park and the waterfront

Take a garden detour to Villa Angiolina, then return to the coast near Hotel Kvarner. A museum visit needs extra time and a check of current opening hours.95

  4. The Maiden and Slatina

Continue to the Maiden with the Seagull, then finish at Slatina. You can turn back, linger in town or use the return transport you checked before departure.1

Make it a morning, not a race.

The suggested time includes modest pauses, not a long lunch or museum visit. If you leave your car in central Opatija, you can reverse the route and return along the same coast. For a shorter outing, start in the centre and walk only as far north as feels comfortable.

Arrive with a plan. Leave room to wander.
