Meet the Lungomare

Some places are best understood on foot.

The Lungomare is the historic seaside promenade linking Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika and Lovran on Croatia’s Kvarner coast. Also known as the Franz Joseph I Promenade, it brings the Riviera down to walking pace: stone underfoot, villas behind the trees, the sea almost within reach.1

Come for a short morning stroll or give the coastline an unhurried day. The pleasure lies in the pauses: a harbour coffee, a garden bench, a different view around the next curve.

5Coastal places, one walk

Choose your chapter

Three ways to meet the coast.

A harbour-to-town morning, a longer walk to Lovran, or an afternoon among Opatija’s landmarks. Start with the day you want to have.

01 / The coastal route

Follow the sea.
Find your rhythm.

Walk south from Volosko towards Lovran, or reverse the journey. You can join the promenade in any of the five places; there is no need to complete it in one go.

Find the promenade on the map

Leave room in the day for the places between destinations.

  1. Volosko

Begin beside the fishing harbour. Narrow lanes rise from the water, and cafés make an easy first pause. Before setting off, choose whether today calls for central Opatija or the whole coast.

  2. Opatija

This is the grand Riviera chapter: Angiolina Park, Hotel Kvarner and the Maiden with the Seagull. Step away from the water into the gardens, then rejoin the promenade by the sea.

  3. Ičići

The coast opens towards the beach and marina. Make this a natural break on a longer walk, with time to sit, refill your water and decide how far you want to continue.

  4. Ika

A small harbour offers a change of scale after Opatija’s terraces. Slow down at the waterfront before the final part of your journey towards Lovran.

  5. Lovran

Finish with a detour into the old town. Leave time for lunch or a drink before your return; a one-way coastal walk is often more rewarding than rushing to retrace it.

02 / Places worth the pause

A coast with character.

Look beyond the postcard. The Riviera’s appeal is in the meeting of everyday coastal life and the elegance of another age.

Volosko · The northern beginning

The small harbour, the slower morning.

In Volosko, begin with coffee facing the boats. Let the lanes draw you a little inland before you return to the water. It is a good way to arrive in the Riviera without immediately moving on.3

Opatija, facing the open sea.

The Maiden with the Seagull, by Zvonko Car, is the waterfront’s familiar silhouette. Pause here, then continue towards the parks and historic hotel terraces. This compact section makes a rewarding first introduction.4

03 / A promenade through time

Before it was a walk,
it was a way of life.

Opatija grew as a place to spend time by the sea. Its villas, gardens and hotel terraces tell that story more clearly than a hurried sightseeing checklist. Walk slowly enough to notice the architecture above the path.

1844
Villa Angiolina begins a new chapter in Opatija’s development as a resort.2
1884
Hotel Kvarner opens, a defining landmark of the emerging Riviera.6
1889
The northern promenade is completed; Opatija is declared a climatic health resort.7
1911
The promenade reaches Lovran, connecting the coastal journey we know today.7

04 / Make it your walk

An hour. A morning. A whole day.

Choose a walk to match your time and energy. These are editorial suggestions, with flexible timings rather than measured itineraries.

45–90 min

A taste of Opatija

Start around Angiolina Park, see the Maiden with the Seagull and continue towards Slatina. Add a garden detour and a coffee stop; turn back whenever you like.

1½–2½ h

From harbour to gardens

Begin in Volosko and follow the sea to central Opatija. Take time for the harbour and parks. Allow extra time if you plan to walk back to your starting point.

3–4 h+

The full coastal story

Follow the promenade from Volosko through Opatija, Ičići and Ika to Lovran. Set aside most of the day if you want a leisurely lunch, photographs or time by the water.

¹ How long is the Lungomare? Visit Opatija’s current dedicated page gives 10 km; 12 km appears in older and other descriptions. Your distance depends on your chosen start, finish and detours. Times above are our planning estimates for one-way visits, except the flexible central stroll.1

Getting there & returning

Decide your return before a one-way walk. Autotrolej publishes the local bus timetables; check the current route, stop, direction and final departure. Taxis are another option. Parking availability and charges vary by location.

Footwear & coastal conditions

Choose shoes with grip, bring water and sun protection. Wet stone can be slippery, and exposed sections are uncomfortable in rough weather. Respect barriers and local notices; this guide does not provide live path conditions.

With children or limited mobility

A short central section gives you more flexibility. Steps, narrow passages and different access points mean the entire route should not be assumed step-free. Ask the tourist information centre about the specific section you want to use.

Coffee, lunch & a swim

Plan pauses in the coastal settlements rather than relying on a particular venue being open. Use designated bathing areas and follow local signs; access to the promenade does not imply permission to enter every hotel terrace or beach facility.

Arrive with a plan. Leave room to wander.

Choose your starting point before you park. These are useful parking options in Opatija; use the operator’s map to check their position against your walk.

Gorovo garage

An option in central Opatija for the landmarks walk. Check the official parking map for its entrance and the pedestrian route down to the waterfront.

Plan the return journey

For a one-way walk, check Autotrolej’s current suburban services before setting off. Confirm the stop, direction and final departure for your chosen date; parking and bus stops are above the seaside path.

A different light. The same sea.

March – May

Autumn

Give yourself time for lunch in town. Check daylight and the forecast before committing to the full route.

December – February

Winter

Choose a calm day and a shorter walk. Enjoy the sea from a safe distance when wind and waves pick up.

A few things to know

Before you set off.

Where does the Opatija Lungomare start and finish?

The classic coastal journey links Volosko and Lovran, passing through Opatija, Ičići and Ika. Walk in either direction or join in the middle.

Do I need a ticket to walk the Lungomare?

No admission ticket is normally required for the public promenade. Parking, transport, museum visits and individual beach services may have separate charges.

Is the Lungomare suitable for a short visit?

Yes. For a first visit, focus on central Opatija around Angiolina Park, the Maiden with the Seagull and Slatina. You do not need to walk the entire route.

Can I walk all the way back?

Yes, if the route is open and the distance suits you, but a return on foot roughly doubles your walking. Plan enough daylight and energy, or check your bus or taxi options before leaving.

Is the whole route accessible with a wheelchair or pushchair?

Do not assume the full promenade is accessible. Steps, widths and access points vary. Ask the local tourist information centre for advice on a suitable section and an accessible entry point.

Which time of year is best?

For walking, we suggest a mild, dry day in spring or autumn. Summer mornings and calm winter days can also be rewarding. Choose according to the forecast and your comfort with heat or wind.

Stay a little longer

The walk is only the beginning.
