02 / The southern walk
Opatija to Lovran. Give the sea an afternoon.
Beyond the centre, the walk becomes a sequence of bays, waterfront villages and places to stop. Let Lovran be the destination, with enough time to enjoy everything before it.

Your walk at a glance
- Start
- Slatina, Opatija
- Finish
- Lovran waterfront
- Suggested time
- 2½–3½ h
Times are editorial suggestions for a relaxed visit, not measured walking times. The tourism board describes the full promenade as about 10 km; your distance depends on entry points and detours. Access from streets can involve steps. Check a specific entrance locally if you need step-free access.1
Along the way
Slatina
Join the waterfront in central Opatija and follow the Lungomare south towards Ičići. Buy water before leaving the centre and check your planned return journey.1
Ičići
The beach and marina mark a useful break. Pause here and decide whether to continue; if you shorten the walk, check your onward transport rather than assuming a departure is imminent.1
Ika
Continue to the small harbour in Ika. It offers a quieter change of scale and a natural place to rest before the final stretch towards Lovran.1
Lovran
Finish on Lovran’s waterfront, then make a separate detour into the old town. Keep enough time to reach your return stop; the coastal path itself is not a bus route.1
Think about the way home first.
This is a suggested one-way itinerary. Walking back adds another substantial stretch, so check the bus timetable or arrange another return before you leave. Carry water and sun protection; if wind or waves make exposed sections uncomfortable, shorten the outing and follow local notices.
